The Sgian Dubh, a small knife kept close for ease of use, is an integral part of Eoghann’s Scottish Highland culture. The adoption of the Sgian Dubh, which translates literally to “the dark knife”, into Scottish Regimental uniforms in the late 18th century is what created the more standardised look we see today. However, there is far more vibrancy than this in the Sgian Dughs history. There was suppression of Scottish culture for over 100 years by the British alongside the highland clearances. Yet, there was a huge interest by the Victorian high society in Scottish figures such as Walter Scott, who went on to reinvent much of Scotland's culture through his work from a wealthy perspective, romanticising what it meant to be a Scot. This was an image however, that didn't necessarily reflect the experience of the common highlander. Eoghann believes there to be much more authenticity in understanding the distinctions between Scott's romanticised view and the lived history of the highlander, and this is something that informs his design and craft.
